Match Report
Sheffield made their third long trip of the week to play Warrington. On arrival they found a very poor playing surface, that although the same to both teams, was not one conducive to playing decent football on. Tom Jones, Pete Davey, Danny Haytead, Jamie Holmshaw all missed the game through injury, with Daz Winter was suspended.
The first period left a lot to be desired for the neutral with both teams trying to come to terms with the playing surface and strong winds. Very little was created by either side.
The second half saw Sheffield with the slight winds at their backs but it was Town who took the lead in the 49th minute when a shank and then a mis-hit around the 18 yard box saw the ball land at the feet of Daniels who made no mistake.
On 67 minutes Rendell seized on a mistake from Sheffield’s defence and ran n on goal. His shot from 15 yards hit a bobble and bounced over a diving Kearney to put the home side two up.
Sheffield made changes and had a real go at Town but fond the home defence and keeper in decent form and a referee who did them as they say ‘no favours’. Asa Ingall pulled a goal back late on and then Vill Powell was denied a possible penalty just before the end.
Clun had had enough of the play and chances to take something back to Sheffield, but alas it was not to be, with perhaps the week’s endeavors and traveling catching up with them a little.
As it turned out, results elsewhere means Sheffield are now guaranteed a play off spot – a wonderful achievement in their first season in the Unibond League. Sheffield will now try and chase a coveted 3rd place in the league when they meet Spalding at home on Wednesday and Stocksbridge at home the following night.
