Match Report
Sheffield played their third game of the week against Spalding United with Manager Dave McCarthy rotating his players to obviously try and keep some players fresh ahead of game against Stocksbridge, the following evening and Alsager Town on the Saturday.

Rob Ward and Darren Holmes sat out the match, whilst Chris Dolby and Stewart Copnell started on the bench alongside Matt Roney. Danny Haystead. Martin Kearney, Pete Davey  and Gav Smith were unavailable through injury , whilst Daz Winter remained suspended. Jamie Holmshaw and Steve Hawes were passed fit to return with ex Grimbsy Town defender Luke Foulkes making his first start of the season at right back.

Club started rather slowly and following a debatable free kick on the edge of the Sheffield box, Garrick followed up Stanhope’s initial shot to put Spalding ahead in only the 7th minutes.

It took this ‘new look’ Sheffield team time to settle and it was Gary Townsend who headed home the equalizer on 20 minutes after Asa Ingall had headed Paul Smith’s cross into his path.

Three minutes later Sheffield took the lead. Jamie Smith was pole-axed by the visiting keeper and Paul Smith smashed home the resulting penalty.

On 31 minutes Vill Powell helped himself to a goal when Jamie Smith squared the ball into his path and on 36 minutes Club made it 4-1 when Ingall headed a Paul Smith cross home at the far post.

The second half saw Sheffield dominate and score there more goals. Jamie Smith helped himself to a hat trick with goals in the 52nd, 80th and 87th minutes, with a solitary response from Garrick giving a final score of 7-2 to Sheffield. Manager McCarthy tried to give some players a rest in the second period, with Copnell, Roney and Dolby all coming onto the pitch and having an impact on the score line.

Next up in 24 hours time is the visit of Stocksbridge and it has to be said that Sheffield players fully deserved the ovation they got from an appreciative crowd when leaving the pitch for having the energy and skill to score seven at home following what is a bruising and hectic schedule.
