Match Report
The FA Youth Cup 2nd Qualifying round
9 October 2007
Ossett Town 0 Sheffield FC 0 (AET: Sheffield win on penalties)
The U19s super run in this prestigious cup competition continues after this exciting tie at Ingfield.
Ossett were first to show and Sean Squires hit the bar with a free header with the Sheffield side claiming offside. Spurred into greater action by this close call Sheffield broke quickly, Jamie Oxley made a great run into the box, Ted Cribley crossed the ball to him and an Ossett defender's boot deflected the ball on to his own bar and somehow Alex Morris and Oxley couldn't make the most of this as they attempted to follow up. Sheffield had more of the play in the middle of the half and Danny McKenzie got a great shot away having been put through by Joel Purkiss. Oxley had another effort just wide and after 36 minutes Sheffield's best opportunity fell to Alex Morris who was put through by Purkiss but Ash Locker in the Ossett goal did ever so well to gather the ball at the Sheffield striker's legs.
Sheffield played some good football at the start of the second half and a move out from the back found Purkiss who played a good ball to McKenzie but Ossett defended well and it came to nothing. McKenzie and Morris were keeping the Ossett defenders troubled and were unlucky to be given offside on a couple of occasions; but towards the middle of the half the team seemd to run out of ideas and weren't creating as much. It took a while to get hld of the game again and Ted Cribley received a good ball from McKenzie, he struck it firmly first time and the keeper did well to prevent the goal. As normal time drew to a close Sheffield's passing improved but they couldn't break the deadlock.
Ossett began extra time on the front foot and pressed hard with a succession of corners. Sheffield broke quickly and Alex Morris was denied a goal by more heroics from Locker. In the second period the keeper made a rare error but with Morris bearing down on goal he did just enough to force the Sheffield striker to shoot wide. He denied McKenzie who had received another great pass from Purkiss, and at the other end Lloyd Gelsthorpe did well with a great tackle to prevent a scoring attept for the home side. After 120 exhausting minutes it was still goalless and the players lined up for penalty kicks. After Ossett had converted the first of these, Danny McKenzie saw his first attempt over the bar but the goalkeeper was adjudged to have been off his line and McKenzie made no mistake with the retake. There was an exchange of succesful scores from then on and it looked as if the tie might have to be settled in sudden death, but Ossett missed their last kick and Purkiss settled it for Sheffield with the last spot kick although Locker got a big hand to it and almost kept it out.
Sheffield now go through to meet Silsden FC in the 3rd qualifying round on Monday 29th October at Cougar Park Keighley; the incentive is a tie against Bury FC at Gigg Lane in early November (they are currently top of the Football League Youth Alliance League)
Team: Liam Smith Elliott Simpson, Kieran Ward, Janni Lipka, Lloyd Gelsthorpe, Andy Gascoigne, Jamie Oxley, Joel Purkiss, Danny McKenzie, Alex Morris, Ted Cribley, Jonathan Askew, Ross Walmsley, Karl Fox
