Hawcroft Off to Italy with England Colleges National Team
This coming week-end, Sheffield FC Ladies’ midfielder, Ellie Hawcroft, embarks on the next part of her development as she travels to Italy with the England Colleges FA National Team to compete in the Roma Caput Mundi Tournament.
The ECFA representative team is a national side representing the best and brightest talents currently within the college system.
England Colleges’ representative teams have been operating for over 10 years. The system provides unique and exciting opportunities for talented male and female footballers to perform at international level, representing their country through domestic and international fixtures.
The England Colleges National Team programme represents the pinnacle of college football. The overall aim of the ECFA International Programme is to develop students who are combining full-time studies in further education colleges with playing high level football, whilst offering talented college staff high quality professional development opportunities.
Ellie’s association with the team started with a two-phased trial back in October 2018, from which she was selected to attend a training camp in November run by former Watford Ladies and Estonia National Team manager, Keith Boanas.
“It was a really good experience to just be selected for the camp”, admitted Hawcroft, “to meet the girls and get involved with the whole set up.”
That was then followed by a competitive game against Ipswich Town’s U21 side, a game in which the young Barnsley-born battler was chosen to captain the side.
“To be selected as captain in the last game was a real honour, an amazing experience for me, and a great opportunity for the whole squad to get to know each other in a competitive game.”
A former Development team player, Hawcroft, now 18, stepped up to make her first team debut earlier this season against Huddersfield Town, and has since scored three goals in 19 appearances for the club.
After tonight’s league game against Nottingham Forest, Ellie packs her bags and rejoins up with the squad to take part of the trip to Italy, and all at Sheffield FC wish her well.
“I’m thrilled to have been selected again”, said Hawcroft, “this time to be a part of the squad that is travelling out to Italy and to compete in such an amazing tournament. I can’t wait really and am looking forward to the challenge.”
