18th November 2005Big Names Flock to Sheffield in Dubai Eric Cantona and Sir Bobby Robson head the queue of new fans for Sheffield FC at SoccerEx in Dubai Eric Cantona and Sir Bobby Robson were the big name converts, as Sheffield FC stole the show at SoccerEx in Dubai.
Many of the 2,000 delegates may have arrived not knowing who Sheffield FC were but, such was the club’s presence at the convention, everyone left knowing about the world’s oldest football club.
Eric Cantona, Sir Bobby Robson and Bryan Robson were amongst a host of football legends to sign up as members of the club; whilst delegates from Inter Milan, Barcelona, FC Porto, Galatasary, Fenerbahce, Kaizer Chiefs and Boca Juniors declared an interest in forming a partnership with the club that celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2007.
The Club team headed back to Sheffield with a deal to produce a board game and a documentary on the table, whilst Chairman Richard Tims was presented with an award for services to football by the event organisers.
“Sheffield FC is now established in the football world,” said Chairman Richard Tims. “There’s lots of exciting opportunities on the horizon. Everyone at SoccerEx, from Barcelona to Sir Bobby Robson, wanted to know the story of Sheffield FC. We’ve made a lot of new friends and the future for the world’s oldest football club looks very bright. We even gave business cards to Bill Clinton and Richard Branson, but we’ll have to wait and see if we get anywhere with that.”
27th October 2005Sheffield FC's Dream Team ChallengeHave your say in deciding Sheffield’s ultimate XISheffield’s been home to some great footballers over the years but, if you had to narrow it down to an ultimate XI, who would make it? Waddle or Currie? Hirst or Deane? Woods or Tracey?
Sheffield FC has joined forces with Hallam FM to find the ultimate Sheffield XI. The idea is to come up with the best eleven players that have played for the Sheffield clubs and, as it wouldn’t be fair to call them United or Wednesday, put them together under the banner of the world’s oldest football club.
Sheffield FC’s Dream Team Challenge launches on October 29th. People will have two weeks to nominate any players they like on the Sheffield FC and Hallam FM websites. On November 16th all the nominations will be whittled down into a shortlist, and people will have two weeks to vote for their ultimate Sheffield XI.
On Friday December 2nd, the day before the first Wednesday-United derby, the Dream Team will be announced live on Hallam FM by Sheffield FC Chairman Richard Tims.
It is hoped that some of the winners will be in the studio to debate the names that made if onto the team sheet.
Whether you’re a Unitedite or a Wednesdayite, it’s up to you to vote, to stop the ‘other lot’ taking over the team!
6th October 2005 Sheffield FC and Real Madrid CF: A union between the oldest and the greatest clubs in the worldOn Wednesday, the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, home of Real Madrid CF, was visited by Club Chairman, Richard Tims and director, Simon Webster. The reason for the visit was to create a partnership between the world's oldest and greatest club sides in preparation for Sheffield FC's 150th anniversary in 2007.
Sheffield FC Chairman Richard Tims commented “The partnership came last year when we were both invited by FIFA to the FIFA Centennial 2004 in Paris. Sheffield FC and Real Madrid CF received a FIFA Centennial Order of Merit, and we´re the only two football clubs in the world ever to receive this award from FIFA.
Because we don´t play professional football. We play for the love of the game, we have been playing football continuously for nearly 150 years. And in this age this is an achievement. We´d like to make partnerships with every football club. There are around 305,000 official football clubs and everyone originated from my club. I think that everyone should have a relationship with the fathers of football.”
Real Madrid´s vice-president Emilio Butragueño showed the visitors around the magnificent Santiago Bernabéu stadium. The Sheffield FC Chairman explained "I would say that there´s nothing in the UK that can compare with this stadium. Manchester United´s ground is fantastic, we´re rebuilding Wembley at the moment which is going to be magnificent and then there's the new Arsenal stadium, but there´s a certain atmosphere about this stadium that takes your breath away. Don´t you have a ball near? ” joked the Chairman. “We appreciate that Real Madrid have taken time to form a partnership with the World's Oldest Club. It´s important for the future of the game.”
