First Team vs. Worksop Town (1 : 3)
Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup
A patched up Club outfit found themselves eliminated from the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup, as Worksop Town took full advantage to run out 3-1 winners on a balmy night at Dronfield, but it wasn’t without controversy.
Sheffield took the lead on 14 minutes, following a good drive on the left from Charlie Wakefield, one that left keeper Andrew Francis helpless.
The main pre-match talking point was the fact that Club had no fit goalkeeper available, so as has been done before, up stepped long serving winger Matt Roney to take his place between the sticks.
The first 25 minutes were fairly uneventful for Roney, however with the first attempt on goal Worksop were level, as Tomas Poole took advantage of poor positional play to catch the keeper unawares with a 25-yard drive from the right flank.
Worse was to come two minutes later, as a Steve Woolley free-kick was only palmed out by Roney, with ex-Clubbie Max Pemberton running in and heading home from close range.
Early in the second half Club went close to levelling, with Ehsan Mohammed making great contact with a strike from 30 yards, the shot beating Francis but skidded inches wide of the post.
Moments later they went closer still; Mohammed’s corner was met by the head of Adam Chapman, with Michael Trench heading off the line.
Worksop had the chance to make the game safe, after Poole was set free on the right, with the end shot flashing across the face of goal.
There was controversy halfway through the half, Mitchell Dunne was hauled down in the area seconds before being able to tap into the empty goal, however the referee waved play away to the amazement of players on both sides.
Worksop capitalised on this seconds after, as Liam Royles made space on the right, before hitting a low drive beyond Roney to make it 3-1.
Kyle Jordan should have made the score more convincing, after finding himself clear in space and one-on-one with Roney, took the ball round and hit the upright.
