First Team vs. Stocksbridge Park Steels (2 : 1)

Tuesday, 1 January, 2019 - 15:00
Evo-Stik League East Division

Sheffield FC moved into the play off positions on New Year's Day, writes Stuart James, as they grabbed a last ditch win in a scrappy encounter with local rivals Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Hero of the day was leading scorer Marc Newsham, who came from the bench to end his minor goal-drought, heading home two for the World's First in the final ten minutes to overturn what would have been - on paper - a shock result, following Alex Wiles' first half strike.

It was a quiet first half with very few chances in the early stages, with Sheffield having a couple from Mitchell Dunne and one from James Gregory that were dealt with easily by Ed Hall, whilst Stocksbridge had their bestt chance from Rory Coleman.

After a spell of end to end football, the visitors took the lead on 31 minutes, as WILES took advantage of sloppy defending to lash home from just inside the area.

The second half saw Sheffield dominate procedings, and despite threatening with several raids forward, the best was a goal-line clearance from a Richard Patterson shot.

There was controversy midway through the half, with James Gregory bearing down on goal Liam McFadyen denied the pacy winger by sliding on the floor to hook the ball clear with his hand, escaping with a yellow card slap on the wrist.

On 83 minutes the leveller came for the hosts, as Matty Downing broke free on the left, crossing in an inch-perfect ball which was powered home by the head of NEWSHAM

It looked as if that would be the full reward for the home side, but after some never-say-die battling in midfield from Daz Winter found Mitchell Dunne on the right, with the cross met in the middle from close range by NEWSHAM to send the Sheffield side into delirium.

The result sends Club into the heady heights of fifth spot, whilst Chris Hilton's Steels side will be ruing the chance to see the game out, and now sit at the foot of the table.
