First Team vs. Romulus (2 : 4)
Evo-Stik League First Division South
The curse of the Coles Lane 3G continued for Sheffield FC this afternoon, writes Stuart James, as Romulus ran out 4-2 winners in a frantic contest. In blustery conditions the hosts took advantage of goals early in each half, taking the lead in the 3rd minute through Courtney Baker-Richardson and despite Joel Purkiss levelling in the 11th minute, Roms regained the lead in the 28th minute through Lee Frances. It became 3-1 inside the first minute from a Lee Smith goal, and although Jamie Hadfield gave Club a bit of hope by reducing the deficit in the 85th minute, an injury time goal from Edwin Ahenkorah wrapped up the game.
Romulus started with the wind at their backs, and started the game in positive fashion, taking the lead in controversial circumstances. A ball was launched into the box and clearly struck the hand of a home player, and whilst the Sheffield defence appealed in vain to referee Dwyer, BAKER-RICHARDS stayed alert enough to drive the ball into the bottom corner.
Club were clearly aggrieved by this injustice, and weren’t far off equalising, as a Joel Purkiss free-kick wasn’t far off the mark. From the resultant goal-kick, Sheffield returned the ball with interest, with PURKISS galloping clear to lob the ball over the keeper Fondop’s head.
Roms continued to look dangerous, with both wingers looking lively, with Ahenkorah and Jackson creating most of the threat down the flanks. There was a close escape for the visitors when Baker-Richardson caught Green off his line, lofting the ball over the head of the young keeper, only to see Tim Whittaker scramble back to hook off the line.
There was nothing Sheffield could do on the half hour mark, as a Mark Branch free-kick found FRANCES in the middle, with the defender shaping a well-crafted header to direct the ball into the corner of the net. Just before the break there was another close call for the away side, when Ahenkorah hit a sweet volley on the turn, one which was deflected onto the bar.
The second half was only 55 seconds old when Romulus made it 3-1, as Aaron Moses-Garvey’s free-kick picked out the header of the skipper SMITH, leaving Green with no chance once again.
Sheffield once again started to put up a resurgent fight, and went close through a snap-volley from James Knowles, whilst Jamie Hadfield was left kicking himself as he missed a great opportunity to pull one back in a goalmouth scramble. The best effort came from Ash Longstaff, who hit a crisp first time effort on target, forcing Maxime Fondop to pull off a spectacular save that injured the keeper in the process.
With four minutes to go Sheffield got their just desserts, as Purkiss turned provider with an excellent free-kick, with HADFIELD rising highest to plant home the header. Sadly for Club, despite pushing for a deserved equaliser, they were caught with a sucker punch in injury time as AHENKORAH charged down a Green clearance to walk the ball into the net.
