First Team vs. Pickering Town (3 : 1)

Saturday, 26 January, 2019 - 15:00
Evo-Stik League East Division

Sheffield FC cruised to their third consecutive home win, writes Stuart James, comfortably beating Pickering Town 3-1 at The Coach and Horses.

Goals from Andrew Gascoigne and Stuart Ludlam put the home side in the driving seat, however there were some nerves late on as Adam Lund pulled one back, however things were calmed with Mitchell Dunne’s 14th goal of the season in injury time.

Club dominated possession from the off, with the away side struggling to get a touch of the ball, and doing little to stop an early red tsunami.

The hosts took the lead on 8 minutes, when James Gregory was tripped in the box by Matty Turnbull, with Andrew Gascoigne sending keeper Charlie Andrew the wrong way from the spot.

Seconds later the Pikes were awarded a penalty, as Ted Cribley tripped Joe Danby with very little danger on the cards, this time though Jonathan Hedge guessed right to deny Ryan Blott with a fine save.

Club made it two midway through the half, with Stuart Ludlam driving the ball through a mess of legs, after the visitors failed to clear a corner.

The Pikes had their closest moment shortly after, as they battled to get their place in the game, with Lewis Taylor’s free-kick met by a volley from Adam Lund that was deflected over.

Sheffield had their moments to put the game to bed, Andrew Gascoigne had an opportunity to notch up “Goal 100” having edged his way into space in the box, however his shot came on his least favoured foot skewing the ball tamely wide.

Just before the break it looked like Club had grabbed their third, a cross from the right was met by a fine overhead kick from Marc Newsham, Charlie Andrew’s save was parried into the path of Richard Patterson who shot home - only to be ruled out by a marginal offside flag.

The second half was a messy affair, the rain making conditions awkward, with Club happy to absorb pressure.

Chances were at a premium, with Sheffield hitting the post, but for much of the contest it deteriorated into a niggly game with referee Fryer forced into brandishing several yellow cards.

Pickering pulled one back five minutes from the end, Lewis Taylor sending in a corner, with Adam Lund rising unmarked to head home his first goal for the club.

Sheffield put the game beyond doubt few minutes later, with substitute Mitchell Dunne being set free on the left, and smashing home emphatically.
