First Team vs. Lincoln United (1 : 2)
Evo-Stik League First Division South
It was a frustrating Tuesday evening at Ashby Avenue for Sheffield management duo of James Colliver and Jay Roper, writes Stuart James, as they fell to an ordinary looking Lincoln United side 2-1 after leading at half time.
A fourth goal in five games for Alec Denton gave Club the lead in the 44th minute, but a two goal blast inside two minutes from Jack McGovern ensured a fruitless return journey for The World’s First.
Lincoln came out all guns blazing in the opening ten minutes, but Sheffield did well to repel the physical hosts, limiting them to a shot from McGovern that nestled in the side netting.
It looked as if their barrage would pay of midway through the half, as Matt Cotton was brought down in the area for the Whites, however keeper Steve Hernandez was more than a match for a sub-par penalty from Danny Brooks, saving comfortably.
Club struggled to gain any momentum, with the best effort a solo run from Jack Walters leaving all watching, only to be denied at the end by a great last ditch tackle from Brooks.
Just before the interval Sheffield got a break, with Ben Partridge getting upended in the box, and DENTON calmly putting the spot-kick away.
After the break Lincoln started to boss matters, and on 56 minutes Sheffield had a soft free-kick awarded against them 25 yards out, with McGOVERN curling a lovely ball around the wall and into the corner.
Moments later a run down the right from Kallum Smith ended with a superb cross, with McGOVERN diving in to powerfully head home, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead.
Sheffield were woken by this, but frustratingly could not do enough to pull themselves back into the game, or test Mario Ziccardi in the Lincoln goal enough to give the home side even the slightest scare.
