First Team vs. Carlton Town (0 : 3)
Evo-Stik League First Division South
Sheffield recorded a third opening day defeat on the bounce with an extremely disappointing display at Stoke Lane, losing 3-0 to Carlton Town. Sheffield created little in the way of threat to Jack Steggles’ goal and gifted the hosts their victory with a catalogue of individual errors that led to the visitors opening and closing the scoring with penalties.
The first period was an even affair, Carlton having the first chance; Jordan Wilson hitting wide after Brett Souter had made a fine save from Wilfred Gnahore. A lovely ball from Jack Turnbull released James Gregory who earned the visitors a corner. Steggles turned the first effort round for another Sheffield set piece and Lee Cooksey just wide.
The Sheffield skipper had another effort just over the bar with Steggles stranded before Gnahore found himself one in one against the Sheffield goal and somehow dragged his shot wide. A disastrous back pass had Brett Souter in all sorts of trouble and he brought Gnahore to ground for an easy penalty decision which Dan Gordon slotted home to give Carlton the lead at half time.
Sheffield started the second period brightly enough; a super ball from Ritchie Humphreys set Gregory on his way towards goalie found Algar whose ball across the penalty area was hooked clear. Another Sheffield attack came to nothing and Wilson found himself through on goal and he hit wide. Gregory had another half chance in the Carlton penalty area but having rounded the ‘keeper couldn’t get enough in his shot which was scrambled away.
Carlton extended the advantage on 66 minutes, a mistake at the back trying to clear lines gifted the ball to Gnahore who made no mistake from about 12 yards. Joel Purkiss replaced a hard-worked Jack Mawson just after the goal and Mohammed Tijani replaced loanee debutant Leslie Sackey with 15 minutes remaining. Carlton were content to do run time down in the final minutes and this led to a soft penalty in added time; this time despatched by Aaron Hooton.
