McCarthy Delighted at Sheffield Masterclass

Sheffield FC manager Dave McCarthy was full of praise for his side’s performance in the 2-0 win over Dutch giants Ajax.

Goals from Jamie Smith and Vill Powell gave Club a historic win in front of more than 5,000 fans at
Bramall Lane

Dave said: “To beat a team described as one of the best youth teams in the world feels very good. We looked organised and played very well. Everyone passed the ball about, defended solidly and created a number of chances, so I’m delighted. We gave 21 players a run-out and there were no injuries, a good result all round.

“I think we limited a talented Ajax side to only a couple of chances, we got men behind the ball and they were left to shooting from long-range.”

The arrival of Ajax to Sheffield was the second game to mark the club’s 150th anniversary celebrations and follows the visit of Inter Milan in November.

Dave added: “To play Ajax and Inter Milan in one season is not bad for little old Sheffield FC! It’s been a great year, with another big crowd to watch us play.”

Sheffield now turn their attentions back to the league and securing a place in the Unibond Division One South Play-offs.

“If we can get into the Play-offs we will be a tough team to stop,” says Dave. “On our day I think we can match anyone in the league. If we can restrict fatigue and get three wins from the remaining fixtures we should be there. Hopefully it will be a nice end to a remarkable season.”
