Match Report
Hallam FC U19s 1 Sheffield FC U19s 2

Sheffield progressed to the next round of the League Cup with a good performance against a much improved Hallam side; goals from Callum Paine and a second half penalty converted by Danny McKenzie were enough to send the visitors through to a second round tie against Dinnington Town.

Sheffield started brightly and Hallam’s keeper had to make a smart save from Paine after he had been put through on goal by McKenzie. Paine was making life very difficult for the Hallam defenders with some intelligent runs and he had another two good opportunities in the space of 10 minutes as Sheffield continued to press forward. However it was Hallam who took the lead on 25 minutes; Joel Purkiss was robbed of the ball in the danger zone and Matt Scanlon was left stranded and could do nothing to prevent a good strike. Purkiss almost immediately made amends when he got the ball into the net but was adjudged to have fouled the keeper. Sheffield continued to press forward and were playing really well; on 40 minutes, Torren Wilson was fouled on the left side of the area. McKenzie took the free kick and Callum Paine got a glancing header to it which sailed into the top right corner of the goal to make it all square at half time.

The second half continued with Sheffield continuing to put pressure on the home defence; Purkiss, Paine and Cribley all went close; Hallam’s keeper made an outstanding double save from Paine and at the other end Matt Scanlon was called into action to make a couple of saves. Ted Cribley had a good shot palmed away to give Sheffield a corner, from this set piece, Elliott Simpson received the ball in the area and was tripped; the referee had no hesitation in awarding the spot kick. Danny McKenzie took responsibility and scored to give Sheffield a deserved lead.

There were several good performances all round - man of the match Callum Paine who gave a very impressive display and fully deserved his goal.
