Swiss Sepp Blatter took over from Joao Havelange on June 8th 1998 to become the eighth President of FIFA. After signing up as a member of Sheffield FC when Chairman Richard Tims went to Paris to receive the FIFA Order of Merit., Mr Blatter has taken a keen interest in the club.

“Sheffield FC’s position is unique within the game,” Sepp told the SFC website. “I am delighted to call myself a member of the oldest football club in the world. This is where it all began.”

England’s inspirational cricket captain Michael Paul Vaughan was born in Manchester on October 29th 1974, but has called Sheffield home for many years.

“I’m delighted to become a member of the world’s oldest football club,” Michael told the SFC website. “I’m a local lad so I’m proud of the fact that football started in the city. Especially as it was down to two cricketers!”

Sheffield rock legends Def Leppard have given given their support to Sheffield FC. The band was presented with a team shirt and an early club photo by chairman Richard Tims after becoming members of the club.


Def Leppard's Joe Elliott (pictured) said: "The picture is amazing, Sheffield FC should be a national treasure. It is something everyone should be proud of."


 
Bass player Rick Savage added: "What the club is trying to achieve is great, I hope it gets the recognition it deserves. Sheffield FC is an important part of football history."

Former England Head Coach Sven Goran Eriksson has come a long way since he started out as assistant coach of Swedish minnows Degerfors in 1976. He’s won Swedish, Portugese and Italian league championships, as well as leading England to three quarter finals’ in major tournaments. But the mighty Swede’s football CV wasn’t complete until he signed-up to Sheffield FC.

"I am delighted to be a member of the oldest football club in the world,” Sven told the SFC website. “English football is rightly famous around the world for its rich history and heritage, and Sheffield FC is a big part of that history. I wish the club every success in the future."




The Clegg Brothers
No history of Sheffield FC would be complete without mention of the Clegg Brothers. JC (Charles) and William Clegg were footballers born and bred and dedicated their lives to the game. Both regularly featured on the Sheffield FC team sheet and both were knighted for their services to English football.

Sir Charles Clegg, as he became known, played for Enbgland against Scotland in the first ever international football match in 1872. In later years he became a referee, taking charge of the FA Cup Finals in 1882 and 1892, and in 1923 he was appointed President of the FA.
