Match Report
North Midland Under 19 League Division 1
18 October 2007
Eastwood Town U19s 2 Sheffield FC U19s 2

Sheffield managed a valuable away point (their first of any kind in the league this season) in this scrappy encounter at Coronation Park. Sheffield made a poor start and Eastwood took the lead with almost the first attack of the game when a hopeful ball across the box richoted in off Lloyd Gelsthorpe. Just after that disaster Sheffield were grateful to the assistant's flag when Eastwood looked to have scored again. It took Sheffield a few moments to compose themselves but the players started to knock the ball about with a bit of purpose and Joel Purkiss found Callum Paine with a nice ball behind the defence but the Sheffield striker was adjudged offside. Sheffield's passing ability paid off after 10 minutes when Ted Cribley put Paine through on goal and he scored with a good strike to make it one apiece. Sheffield were now playing with a bit of confidence and another stylish move involving Purkiss and Josh Jones gave Paine another opportunity his volley was just over. Sheffield were guilty of a lock of concentration which allowed eastwood back into the game; the passing went awry and in the middle of the half the side looked as lacking in confidence as they had at the start. As the first half drew to a close Sheffield got back into it again and Purkiss and Danny McKenzie both came close to scoring. On 43 minutes McKenzie was bundled over in the area and scored the spot kick himself and with the last move Cribley had a great effort from the edge of the area just over.

Both teams tried to inject some pace into the game at the start of the second half. Paine received the ball in a good position but his pass to Cribley was not up to standard and the move broke down. Eastwood broke quickly and Luke White scored with the Sheffield defence looking for the offside flag. Ben shepherd replaced Tom Brooke on 58 minutes and he put McKenie through with a good ball; the striker took one touch too many and his effort wnt over the bar. McKenzie went close on 70 minutes but following this matt Scanlon had to make a good save at the other end as Eastwood were capable of getting forward quickly. Alex Morris replaced the injured Paine on 78 minuted, he saw an effort just wide following a free kick. Shepherd shot just wide of the goal and towards the end Janni Lipka had a header agonisingly wide following a corner and with just about the last kick Cribley had an effort well over the bar.

Not the result the team wanted but a hard won away point which at least gets the side off the mark in the league following all the good work being done in the youth cup.
